The Antibiotic Susceptibility Test (AST) determines resistance and sensitivity of bacteria to a range of antibiotics. Our standard aerobic AST involves culture from swab on Mueller-Hinton agar and the isolation of single colonies after 16-24 hrs of incubation. Each colony type is then tested by exposure to 14 antibiotic discs for an additional 16 hrs.
A report is generated listing antibiotics that will be most effective in killing the bacteria found in the swab.
AST results take 2-3 days from receipt of the swab.
